If cars are passing you in the right lanes and you are toodeling along in the FAST LANE....get over...PLEASE!!!! Lane Values are: Fast, Faster & Fastest
Thank you for allowing me to vent about this.
I have a long commute! I agree with you 100%.
You are the type of driver I constantly have to watch out for. Your illegally fast driving is increasing my chances of getting in an accident. The posted speed limit is as fast as you should be driving. Period. If you need to go faster, leave home earlier.
In the meantime, I'll be sure to drive that much slower in the left lane tonight on the slim chance that you're one of those overly anxious people behind me.
As long as the "Fastest" is still at the posted speed - That speed limit is a MAXIMUM not a suggested minimum... Don't flash your lights or tailgate me when I am doing only 5 miles per hour over the limit. The law is the law - Don't like it, become a Legislator and change it...
According to MY State's law on the books:
27-51-301(b) Law prohibits obstructing traffic by driving continuously in the left lane.
So move over people...let us faster drivers pass. If we are speeding, it is the responsibility of law enforcement-not YOU-to slow us down.
Rock on triplemmm! I'm right behind ya! (Unless you get stuck behind a toodler and I manage to squeeze in front of you)
Seriously, get out of the f'n left lane, especially if faster drivers crawling up your arse makes you nervous. Don't give me the laws crap, :"everybody" breaks them "everyday"
This is highly satisfying to me. I've always enjoyed the thought that my legal driving in the fast lane is potentially pissing off people behind me that would prefer to drive faster and risk my life in the process. Now I know that it really does piss people off. Thanks for confirming this.
Oh, and the 27-51-301(b) quote does *not* give you the right to drive faster than the posted speed limit. The limit still applies. If you don't understand that, you're not intelligent enough to be driving. Get off the road and take public transportation.
And to webquacks: don't be such an f'n lemming. Just because "everybody" does it "everyday" doesn't make it right. The law is the law, and if you don't like it, join triplemmm on public transportation and stop endangering my life.
I agree 100%. The reason people call it the fast lane is we WANT to go fast. There's plenty of other lanes to choose from if you want to go slow.
And a big thank you to the MTA for having all of those "not in service" buses on the freeway during the rush hours.
polyrhythm: Here is a piece of information for you... It has been statistically proven that those who insist on driving slower in a major lane than the rest of traffic, regardless of what the posted speed limit is, is at a much greater risk of being involved in a vehicular accident, than if they were to go with the FLOW OF TRAFFIC... For every 5mph difference in speed, you increase your risk by 100%... So try not to use that law crap... those are there to collect revenue for the state from those that are dumb enough to not know how to use your favored laws. ALSO - most speed limits are seriously outdated, and have not been changed for that very reason - MONEY So if you want to continue being the slowest car in the left hand lane, when you should be driving in the right hand lane - don't be surprised when the hand of fate takes you out of the picture permanently. Majority rules on the roadways.
I hate it too when people drive slow in the fast lane. Yes I drive fast and I will take the ticket if stopped. It is my ticket not yours so stay out of the fast lane if you drive the maximum speed limit.
To babble and roadrunner, I saw Amen!! Left lane hogs drive me crazy.
roadrunner86: Your attitude is dangerously incorrect. Driving above the posted speed limit is illegal, period. Someone driving faster than the speed limit would more than likely be at fault for any accident that occurred as a result of a large difference in speed, regardless of the lane they're in. Oh, and what's this about majority rules? If 51% of the drivers on the road were drunk, would that imply that I should get drunk too before getting behind the wheel? Think about what you post next time, please.
Hopefully this debate will soon be moot. Cars that drive themselves are the wave of the future. There will come a day when you won't be allowed to drive. Everybody will be going the same speed, determined by heuristics much smarter than those of you who don't understand the most basic of laws. Until then, let me just keep it nice and simple. Please drive safe.
Most of the times, it is poor judgment that causes accidents, not speed, per se. Exceeding the speed limit, while it may be illegal, is not necessarily unsafe. And certainly, those who hog the left lanes are not there to police speed limits. I say, just get out of the way and let those who wish to speed do so.
The people that said they will intentionally drive slower in the left lane are friggin idiots. If you do go slow in the left lane than I will tailgate, flash, and honk at you. If I get a ticket, I am going to pay it -- not you. You are probably going so damn slow in the left lane (while nobody is in the middle or right lane) because you are the dumbass that is talking on his cell phone.
"Someone driving faster than the speed limit would more than likely be at fault for any accident that occurred as a result of a large difference in speed, regardless of the lane they€™re in." That is an assanine statement. There are too many mitigating factors in driving to say that speed would likely be the cause. How do you know the slow driver wasn't drunk? Should we all do exactly the posted speed limit? Because excess differences in speed (i.e your slow driving) causes accidents according to you.
Keep driving too fast by all means! I'm an EMT, and speeders are one the main reasons I have a job (They are ranked just behind people who don't wear seatbelts). Law abiders should still stay in the right lane, though, so emergency vehicles can get through. (It may be YOUR house that's on fire or YOUR relative who needs medical care.)
Left lane bandits should have their licenses taken away. It is one of the biggest reasons for traffic jams when you get idiots who think the far left lane (not the HOV lane, that's a whole other topic) is there's for the taking simply because no one is in it. Then, they proceed to drive the speed limit.
The lane is for PASSING... not STAYING. Get in, get around and get out. Is that really so difficult to understand?
I live in AZ and the speed limit on the 101 here is 65. That in my opinion is just too slow for a highway. Especially when you see some non highway roads that have speed limits posted at 55. That just doesn't make any sense to me. Even though there is a posted speed limit you should go with the flow of traffic up to a certain point. I don't think going 75 is that unsafe. That actually is about what most people drive. It's the people who are eating, talking on their phones or trying to put on makeup driving that fast that you really need to watch out for.
polyrhythms you say you don't break the law... Yet in my state like mentioned above YOU ARE breaking the law by not moving over, and if you cause a wreck by not moving over you can be fined and sited as the cause of the wreck even when the person behind you was speeding. Good luck if you ever travel down here.
In regards to roadrunner86 's comment: "It has been statistically proven that those who insist on driving slower in a major lane than the rest of traffic, regardless of what the posted speed limit is, is at a much greater risk of being involved in a vehicular accident, than if they were to go with the FLOW OF TRAFFIC"
Assuming you didn't just make that up (good chance), some of that statement bears some truth about your chances of "being" in an accident. But personally, I'd be more concerned with the statistics of me actually SURVIVING the acident. In this case, you're statement couldn't be further from the truth. Here is a "real" statistic for you:
Slower drivers in the left lane might be slightly more at risk to be "in" an accident, but it's the speeding idiots like you that they will end up scraping off the highway with a damn snow shovel and a soup ladle after a wreck, due to your excessive speeding, while I will get to go home to my family at night, and be thankful I was obeying the law.
Accidents are unavoidable. that's why they are called accidents, and not "on purposes" - but your chances of "surviving" the accident, which should be the most important thing to you in the first place (not a freaking ticket, or insurance, or even your car), are what people like me and Polyrhythms are trying to help you others understand and respect. You are taking other people's lives into your hands to get somewhere 2 minutes quicker. Assume that the speed limit was posted as 60mph. Do you realize that if I was driving at 60mph, and you pass me going 70mph, that even if we both drove at those same speeds respectively for the full hour, you are only five miles up the road from me after that whole hour? And at 60mph, I will arrive right behind you 5 minutes later. You would actually speed recklessly for AN ENTIRE HOUR to save five minutes?? And you call us the morons for not getting out of your way. That's just sad!
I called no one a moron. I just pointed out that in some states what you are doing is illegal. In Texas for example there are signs posted on the highways telling drivers that it is illegal to drive in the left lane. The left lane is for passing only. So if you are impeading traffic for any reason you are breaking the law just as much as the speeder is. I am not in favor of the person speeding and passing everyone BUT that is between him and the State Trooper.
After reading these posts again I think we might have a difference in opion based on were we live. Down here in the Southwest we have a lot of open stright level roads which have legal speeds of 60, 70 and yes even 80 miles per hour. Where as up north your roads have more curves and hills as well as extream wheather conditions like snow and ice. I would be surprised if any of the northern staes has an 80 MPH speed limit which is not uncommon down here. When you are on a long (50+miles)straight level road the odds of an accident are low unless another driver does something to cause it or the very rare case of a mechinical problem. Our cars are well inspected here and not the casue of most wrecks.
ummm....just move over!! or we can play the little game and pass the slug and get in front of them and let off the gas. or just keep playing the game and trap them in the fast lane (they need to get off at some point). again...just move over and avoid the games and babble. :-)
I really don't understand your reasoning for drving in the left lane when there is a right lane that will surely accommodate your speed and thus, you won't have traffic backing up behind you.
If people want to pass you and break the speed limit in the left lane,, let them and leave it up to the State Trooper to stop them but in my opinion, driving the speed limit in the left lane when there's a right lane right next to you to drive in..you are just impeding the flow of traffic.
What's even worse is when we're behind you on two way roads and we can't get past you. 5 mph over the speed limit is NOT going to get you a ticket..probably not even 10 depending what State you're in. so if you wanna stay safe and make it 5 over..all of us drivers would be happy for that.
Again, sorry but there is NOTHING worse than getting behind someone that insists on doing the EXACT speed limit whether on the highway..or through town. I know I'm gonna get hit upside the head for this but as many of us say while we're behind you..."Get a horse!!"..and that's putting it nicely..lol!!
