Spider Webs

I don't know if it is just here in Southern California, but all of a sudden there are huge spider webs around my house, my office, everywhere.  And there are these big, friggin' brown spiders spinning them.  They spin these webs so quickly, and I keep walking into them.  One had the nerve to put one right in front of my front door when I went out to dinner. When I can home, I walked right into it, and then I didn't want to go into my house, scared I would bring this huge spider into my house.  If the webs get much bigger they will capture a Mini Cooper.

I don't think brown ...

I don't think brown recluses spin big webs. Don't they hide is dark corners and whatnot?

eww, dont say that, CR. ...

eww, dont say that, CR. icky!! nothing is worse than walking into a giant spider web when you least expect it. **shudders** oooh, i hate that.

I don't think they are ...

I don't think they are brown recluses. They are more like the color of June bugs, like a carmel color. I have heard the recluses do hide in dark corners and wood piles. I always have to remember to wear gloves when I am cleaning out my garage.

Spiders normally do not bother me, but these are huge. Snakes and lizards give me the creeps

Thanks for the picture, ...

Thanks for the picture, thank goodness the spiders spinning the webs are not recluses. The ones living around my house have meatier bodies and legs. Now I am going to be looking at every spider to see if it is recluse!

what color are the ...

what color are the spiders?? and do they have any distictive markings??

also, what state do you live in?? i enjoy searching for things. as much as i hate spiders, i love researching them.

i hate spiders and bugs in my house so spray around the doors and windows every other month. that keeps them O-U-T..... :-)

we have that thing you ...

we have that thing you plug into the outlet and its supposed to send small currents around the house only painful to rodents and insects. we dont usually have spiders, but i have seen them. theyre usually those clearish yellow house spiders.

I live in Southern ...

I live in Southern California (Los Angeles). The spiders are big, like their bodies are about the size of a quarter. They had no distinct markings. They are the color of a carmel candy. I would love to know more about them. Thanks

brown recluses ARE deadly ...

brown recluses ARE deadly if not treated when bitten, be careful.
I had a prob with roaches, so I bought RAID MAX, in the blue can at walmart and it last 6 mos when you use it and it does work THAT long cuz I sprayed about 2 mos ago and I found a DEAD roach last night in my bathroom!! I'm sure they have something similar for spiders you can use, if it killed roaches, it'll kill spiders too!

A neighbor of mine was ...

A neighbor of mine was bitten by a recluse and had to be hospitlized. That scared me. I might spray my garage with the Raid Max before I clean it out again. I also have a fear of finding rats in there! We had a problem with rats after an old house was knocked down. Luckily the rats never got into my house, but I think they did explore the garage.

I had several thoughts ...

I had several thoughts reading thru the comments.

1) Since spiders tend to eat other insects, what kind of humongous insects must be in your neighborhood to attract such big-ass spiders?!

2) The Wikipedia entry said to identify spiders by their eyes. Yeah, RIGHT, I'm gonna get close enough to look into it's EYES. hahahahah.

3) The comment about spiders with "meatier bodies and legs" makes me think of an ad for chicken parts.

4) You're in Southern California. Maybe the spiders are undocumented immigrants, in which case they'll protest if you try to get rid of them.

NJWabbit, I think the ...

NJWabbit,

I think the spiders are trying to capture the undocumented immigrants!

I might try to photograph one of these suckers in the next few days!

I used to find Funnel ...

I used to find Funnel Weaver spiders around my old house...those things were huge....including the legs, they were a little smaller than my hand...and they weren't skinny.

We have black widow spiders all over the place here...even the average toddler can identify them and know not to touch them. I find them everywhere.

oh, walter! oh GOD! thats ...

oh, walter! oh GOD! thats got to be one of the freakiest things ive heard in a while....madaboutmesses, im going to do a little research today and see what i can come up with. thanks for the time-killing project! i love it! (seriously, that wasnt sarcasm).

when you say meaty, do you ...

when you say meaty, do you mean a very large ROUND body with thich legs or a oval shaped body? like, is its butt really fat and round like a ball or longer but meaty? also, what do the webs look like? are they sparatic or very fancy? are they in corners or across anything? are the in more wooded areas or dark corners? where have you seen these spiders and their webs specifically?

I was out in the woods ...

I was out in the woods doing a night land navigation course with a couple of people from my team when me and the guy I was finding points with walked up on this hill between two trees. The distance between these trees was large enough to put a 2.5 tons truck in. I happened to turn on my flashlight (it was night land nav) to make sure we didn't fall into any ditches and we just cam within inches of walking into this web that was strung from tree to tree. The web had to be at least 15 feet in diameter. I am not sure what spider was in that but I didn't want to find out. There are spiders in Korea that are as big across as your hand with fingers spread all the way out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orb-weaver_spider ::i dont think its this one, but it almost matches the discription. location of web is not the same and the legs are too skinny::

kat, that is so freaky! i think i would have cried if i had walked into that web. lol.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wi ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sac_spider ::again, i dont think this is it only because the body and legs seem a little slimmer than what im picturing. the butt is meaty, though. also, the location is dead on. however, they build webs on leaves, not along doorways and such::

I have a best friend who was bit by a brown recluse when she was in high school. She was so sick from that and now she can't have kids b/c of the scar tissue that was left over from the surgery and the bite itself.

Conana we told everyone about that web and I think some actually did walk into it and screamed at the top of their lungs Not sure if it was a male or female but the woke up the people who had houses along the installation boundary. This was like 1230 in the morning.

I have wolf spiders at my house right when I start getting the garden ready for planting. Someone told my hubby that they were poisonous. They are not. But the spiders I seen in Korea are only found over there and they are huge and build big webs in trees and they are black with yellow and red and green on them. Pretty spiders but I don't want to play with them.

But all this talk about ...

But all this talk about spiders is making my skin crawl and I am not afraid of spiders but just the thought of them crawling causes the automatic response in your brain the make your skin crawl.

sorry to hear about your ...

sorry to hear about your friend. that has got to be one hell of a bite. ive been reading a little on them and it seems that recluse bites are about 80% misdiagnosed. instead of recluse bites they are something else, i cant recall what though.

and LOL to the screaming. my guess, a guy. lol. i would love to find out what kind of spider did that! **shudders at the thought**

yeah, i keep getting ...

yeah, i keep getting tickle feeling on my legs and stomach. i actually reacted violently to a tickle a few minutes ago and kicked the garbage can under my desk. lol. ::BANG!:: the spider pics arent creeping me out but i guess, like you said, its the bodies natural response. lol. damn spiders.

It bit her while she was sleeping on the couch. she didn't think anything of it until it started to hurt and it split open. There are black widow spiders all over the place around here. Not too many brown recluses though.

**shudders** i dont think ...

**shudders** i dont think ive ever SEEN a black widow and i would be perfectly content to never see one. i am so glad the brown recluse lives south of me. i dont think i could sleep at night knowing theres brown recluses lingering around the house/garage.

i did almost put my hand on a banana spider when i was playing on a playground as a kid. my dad told me there were very poisonous. turns out, theyre not. and when i was at camp as a kid there was a wolf spider the size of my open hand on the wall in the ladies room. freaked us all out.

LOL, you guys, whenever people talk about bugs, I always feel like something's on me too and start jumping and kicking things!! LOL!!
I see little ones around the house from time to time and I suck up their webs with the vacuum along with them sometimes. I think it is safe to ASSUME that ALL spiders are poisonous/dangerous because we don't know WHICH ones are! only the more "popular" ones.

The only ones in North ...

The only ones in North America that I know that are poisonous are the black widow (female) the brown recluse, and daddy long legs. they are poisonous but they don't have fangs large enough to bite an adult. They usually kill the dogs, cats or babies that eat them.

I don't have to worry ...

I don't have to worry about spiders. I hvae cats and snakes and spiders don't like either one. They also don't like dogs which would expalin why I dont' have any in the dog kennel either

i rarely see a spider ...

i rarely see a spider around our apartment, but when i do....ooh, watch out, because it will die. once i was watching tv leaning up against the wall in the bedroom. i see out of the corner of my eye something move. i jerk to the side and discover its one of those little clearish yellow ones. i grab something and try to squash it. i miss and end up swatting it to the floor. hoping that was that for the night i continue to watch tv. about 40 minutes or so later i see something out of the corner of my eye. i look over and AGAIN its the same darn spider in the same spot. so this time i grab a shoe and kill it. yeek, was i glad it didnt crawl on me. i mean, it was literally RIGHT next to my shoulder.

We have this friend who is ...

We have this friend who is sooooooooooooooooo afraid of spiders that he almost wrecked his car with us andhis wife in it b/c a spider crawled down the door. He screamed like a little beotch when I tossed a toy spider on him. That was funny to see a grown man scream like that.

lol. a toy spider! lol. i ...

lol. a toy spider! lol. i like to leave one of those little black plastic spider rings lingering in random places. one time i put it under the toilet seat cover before i went to bed. when i woke up in the morning and saw my boyfriends sister go into the bathroom. i heard the toilet seat drop hard and real fast. lol. it freaked her out. lol.

ROTFLMFAO!!!! that is ...

ROTFLMFAO!!!! that is classic. Nothing like scaring someone with a toy. How bout this....I have snakes. I had a friend staying with me when I got back from Korea and I knew she is afraid of snakes. Now one of my snakes is a escape artist. He happened to get out one night and I found out right before I left to go to PT. I told her to keep on the look out for him until I cam home to change for work. You talking about a flash. She jumped up off the couch and ran into the bathroom and didn't come out until I cam home after PT and found the snake under the stand his cage was on. I nearly die laughing.

lol. that is awesome! how ...

lol. that is awesome! how can anyone be afraid of a non venomous snake?? i love snakes. a friend in high school brought his on the day of our environmental science final. since there were only about 8 of us in the class, our teacher was cool with it.
