i don't understand
really, i don't wanna debate or anything, but if there are any Catholics here, i've always wanted to know something, but i don't ask anyone personally because i don't want to come across as rude or give any priests the idea that i am trying to stump them, i'm just very curious
what i'm wondering is why are catholic priests not allowed to get married? i have NEVER understood this, when marriage and sex are gifts from God, why deny the very person who's doing the most Godly work by spreading the gospel the right to have a wife and children? where did this originate? and what is the purpose of this practice? i mean what are they trying to prove by not letting them get married or have sex?

Me and a friend of mine ...
Me and a friend of mine were talking about this at lunch. I am catholic and she is christian (not sure which type). I am not really sure. I think it has something to do with them giving their life to only God. Meaning no wife or children. But I could be wrong.
I don't know. I know ...
I don't know. I know early priests were allowed to marry, and also practiced magic and alchamy (sorry, to lazy to spell check that). At some point that changed, but I don't know why.

Also Celibacy is a BIG part of it.

Well, they do kinda push the whole sex as sin angle, so I guess it's a way to keep pure?
mostly has to do with ...
mostly has to do with devoting their lives entirely to God, and how the belief is somewhat like them being a bit "closer" to him, that's probably a bad choice of words, but i don't have a much better description i read something once that sort of broke it all down and remember it saying "The Catholic Church has always known that a Pastor who is a family man has a heart that is naturally divided. History shows that there was always a tradition of celibate priests in the early Church, although it was not exclusive." I wish i could find the website, but that's basically it

And now for the cynical angle: Priests WERE allowed to marry and have families until the Church hierarchy realized that any worldly belongings would be left to priests' families. If they can't have a family, they can leave everything to the Church.

Yeah cause the church will know what to do with my flat iron

CR, that's the funniest thing I've heard all day. Wabbit, I'm pretty sure priests take a vow of poverty, so they have nothing to give the church, of course they would also have nothing to give a family, either.
that is funny CR! and ...
that is funny CR! and don't forget the quesadilla maker
Well the church might have ...
Well the church might have the Foreman Grill already. They don't know what their missing not having the quesadilla maker! Or the Flowbee :)

I'm Catholic and have no idea, but I think it has to do with the sacrament of Holy Order that is given to nuns and priests, a vow of celibacy is the stipulation for giving you life to God, that's all I know.
there are 7 Holy Sacraments:
Baptism
Reconciliation (confession)
Communion
Confirmation (has to do w/ the Holy Spirit, used to be done in 8th grade--now done in 12th)
Marriage
Anointing of the sick
Holy Orders
From my limited ...
From my limited knowledge--- the priest never marries because 1) he chooses to do so under free will, 2) He would not fully fulfill the vocation of spouse or father, 3) in the New Testament Jesus tells his disciples to leave behind "everything" and follow me. Priests are supposed to follow Jesus lead , never marry, and remain celibate.A problem has cropped up because priests from the Eastern Church (who can marry) are leaving and coming to the Roman Church.
Let me say this in defense of my church---- a male or female of any religion may remain a batchelor or "old maid" and it's no big deal, but if it's a Catholic priest or nun people think it's wierd.
Maybe it's because there ...
Maybe it's because there isn't a place where it's legal for them to marry underage boys.

i just think it's odd that they're not allowed to, not that they choose to
i have plenty of friends who will never marry or have kids, and i don't think they're weird because it's they're choice
i think it's weird when you're not given the choice
If you look at the way the ...
If you look at the way the Catholic faith operates, they actually a great many things that aren't according to Scripture. For one thing, look at the ridiculous laity class system they operate under with all the special garb and titles and all that nonsense. None of that is according to the Scriptures. Jesus even said "let noone on earth be called 'Father' for your Father is in the heavens". Yet, here you have deacons, people being called "reverend" and "father" even to this day. Church leaders are getting paid exorbitant "salaries" for their services, in complete dis-agreement with the Bible principle regarding spiritual truth: "you received free, give free". The Bible lays no prohibition on marriage for the older men of the congregation, that in itself is a Catholic rule. Mass, communion, confirmation.....all activities with either no solid basis in scripture or a twisted interpretation of it.
