Post Office

I went to the post office at 5AM and there was no info posted on the cost of mailing a letter. The stamp in the machine had a flag printed on it but no denomination. How the hell much is it worth? Why are there 2 mail slots? Local and out of town. I was in Spencerville,MD. I could have thrown a rock out of that town. There are 2 towns walking distance of the post office. Are they considered local or out of town? The internet may have cut into their business but not being user friendly doesn't help much either.

41 cents but they don't ...

41 cents but they don't put a denomination on it anymore cuz they keep having to change the stamps cuz THEY KEEP RAISING THE PRICE!!!
I have a roll of 100 of 39 cent stamps I bought about a year ago then I had to go and buy about 80 2cent stamps cuz I don't mail stuff very often so it lasts a long time, but pretty soon i'm gonna have 2 or 3 2cent stamps on letters if they keep going up!!

I would guess local for ...

I would guess local for the letter unless it's over 75-100 miles away.

Dawn--- you'll love this. If I mail a letter in my home town to someone else in my home town, it goes to our post office, then 23 miles to Gulfport to be cancelled, then comes 23 miles back to my town to be delivered!

You guys are making me laugh. This just shows how organized our government is!

that's funny chubby BUT did you know that EVERY piece of FEDEX packages go thru Memphis TN no matter where it's going even if it's IN the same city!! My husb told me that and I was floored, I thought so much waste of gas and time BUT it's headquarters and everything passes through there!

Dawn--- I hear you loud ...

Dawn--- I hear you loud and clear! Check this out--- I'm flying to Orlando at the end of the month from the Gulf Coast of MS. Whether I fly from Gulfport or Mobile, I have to fly to Memphis or Atlanta first. So I'm flying north to wind up almost due east. No wonder the airlines have financial problems. There is one new airline that flies nonstop from Gpt to Orlando-Sanford, but only on Mon-Wed-Fri. and I'm not giving up two days of my vacation!.

I used to work in the post ...

I used to work in the post office, so let me try and explain their stupidity...
They no longer want the post office to cancell your stamp, they send it through to the district office to where the machines can do it, (no man hours) local is considdered the town you live in, only because they can keep the letter at the post office and deliver it the next day. But they are also trying to get rid of the "local" boxes, and want every peice sent to district so it can be counted. They want to know how much business everyone is doing, that is how they give the post offices a budget and teh amout of hours that they can use in man hours a week.
Stamps, go up for gas and yada yada yada..... whatever. They make billions of dollars a year. BILLIONS!
They are trying to make everyone buy and use the postoffice's on-line capabilities.......that is also why customer service sucks.

I was just up the road a piece in Dayton today and saw their post office. It's a teensy tiny one room little building, really kinda cute actually. I had to wonder, as I passed by, what the service might be like there.

I know where I am I once mailed a letter (a contract) to a client who called the previous afternoon to say they wanted to book my photo services. I dropped it off at the main post office the next morning. The letter was going to the same zip code. Later that day, the client called to thank me for such an amazingly fast delivery of the contract. I nearly fell off my desk chair! It arrived same day!

Sometimes they do a good job. Sometimes they don't.

On a somewhat related note, remember that rash of post office killings by disgruntled employees some years back that gave birth to the term "going postal"? Well, a joke went around "What does it mean when the post office flags are flying at half staff?" - answer - "They're hiring" I always loved that one however sardonic it may be.
