I have a problem.

my daughter actually is the one with the problem...stomach/gastro-type problems. she'll be 13 on Tuesday the 21st and she's in 8th grade. she started school on this past Tues. the 14th and missed Wed. her 2nd day of school cuz she had diarrhea and stomach cramping and felt like she was gonna puke. she has NOT gotten her period yet and I don't think that is the problem. Thursday she went to school ok but did say that she had a little bit of an upset stomach. Now it's Friday and she was on the toilet when I woke up at 5:45 and I asked her what she ate, NOTHING, so she hadn't eaten yet and she's already on the toilet. I thought it was maybe that she was eating too much of a heavy breakfast before school.
then I turned psychological and asked if she had any problems at school, but she JUST started, what could be happening yet?? she said that everything was fine and she WANTS to go to school.
Last year she missed about 4-5 days because of this same problem and the doctor said to just make sure she eats light in the morning, like just a boiled egg and it worked for a LITTLE while but at least once a month she calls from school about her stomach problems and I have to pick her up and most of the time by the time we get home , SHE'S FINE!! that's why I think maybe it's an unconscious thing in her head but I need to find out what's wrong if it's physical or mental. My mom WANTS me to take her to a psych consult. I don't know, maybe I'll try the pediatrician AGAIN, maybe it is something wrong like IBS or something. I just wanted to see if any of you had some suggestions.

It started in 6th grade ...

It started in 6th grade and has gotten more frequent as the years go by. she was fine ALL summer but now it's like everyday while she's getting ready for school or after she's gotten there, it's her STOMACH again. My husb is pissed and said that she needs to suck it up and go to school cuz she's fine whenever you pick her up so she needs to grow up, BUT she's NOT calling HIM all day long about her stomach!!

WRNING: this is going to ...

WRNING: this is going to be very personal and a little graphic for the people who dont like to discuss periods....

i had an issue somewhat similar during 8th grade. i hadnt had my period yet and towards the end of the year i was having the worst cramps. i couldnt eat and i was nauseas all the time. my mom kept telling me im going to start my period soon. i thought, "this CANT be how painful menstrual cramps are. it has to be something else." it got so bad i couldnt even go to the bathroom anymore (perhaps if your daughter has the same thing her bowels are taking a different route, so to speak). so finally my mom took me to the gyn. and they discovered that (and i was 14 so i dont remember all the details of how it went, im going to tell you how i heard/understood it all...) that my hymen hadnt broken for my period to come out so it was basically filling up in me like a balloon. it was pushing my organs up and blocking me from using the potty number 2). i had to have, what they called, a hymenectomy. basically (again, from my understanding) they surgically cut my hymen to drain the blood. apparently i had had my period for about 9 months or so and it was just sitting in me filling up more and more. gotta say, worst pain i ever had.

hope i didnt get too graphic for you people. i know its some personal info but im trying to help and give some ideas.

good luck, dawn.

I just looked up IBS on ...

I just looked up IBS on google and the symptoms sound like hers, also she CAN drink milk with no problem, so it's not that.

wow, that is NEWS to me!!! ...

wow, that is NEWS to me!!! I'll be sure to mention that one to the doc!

yeah, it was pretty ...

yeah, it was pretty unusual for them, too. apparently it got so bad that the "bubble" was beginning to be exposed from my, umm, lady region. had i waited any longer i would have died from blood poisoning and internal bleeding. something like that.

conana, how on earth do ...

conana, how on earth do you think that a story like that is going to disgust us??? For goodness sakes......coming from the poop queen?? LOL!
Dawn, I feel for you..I know how it feels to have your baby hurting, and you don't know how to fix it. I would also try another doctor, to get a different outlook on it. See what they suggest.

I can't believe you were ...

I can't believe you were able to go that long and not been that sick right away! to go 9 months was unbelievable!! something like that inside you THAT long seems like it would be bad after one month!!

It might dianosis help if ...

It might dianosis help if she kept a diary of what she eats and when she gets sick. Have her write down everything that she puts in her mouth. Also have her describe the symptoms and what was going on when they occured.
Also ask your family if there is anybody that has similar symptoms and if they know what causes them.
You may be able to pinpoint a problem right away.
BTW, I would seriously consider taking her to a GYN instead of a pediatrician. It will be embarrassing for her, but she'll get over it. Gyn's deal with iBS too.

Conana, that's crazy! I ...

Conana, that's crazy! I was always told that by the time you got your period your hymen had holes and stuff to let it out.

Dawn, my guess would be it's pyschological or mabe a combination. My sister never had migraines until she had problems at school in the 7th grade, now she gets them all the time and took like 3 years out of school.

It could be anxiety of ...

It could be anxiety of some sort. I get anxiety attacks and if you have anxiety or stress about something it can cause issues with your bowel movements and also cause stomache pain. You also are not very hungry and can start to lose weight.

yeah she's only 76lbs as ...

yeah she's only 76lbs as it is now BUT eats all the time, little small meals thru the day. I made an appt for tues on her b-day, the earliest I could get it and we'll go from there I guess, if it doesn't help I'll consider a psych consult.

liz, apparently i had a ...

liz, apparently i had a super tough hymen. lol. i dont know. my boyfriend seems to think it was because of that that i dont feel anything during, well, you know. ;-)

NOTHING conana?? you POOR baby :(

yip. pretty much ...

yip. pretty much absolutely nothing. it sucks. i feel bad for him because i get no enjoyment at all so i never want to fool around. ive tried different pills, lubricants, etc. and nothing has helped. one lubrication actually started burning so bad i had to take a bath. lol.

You poor, poor child! ...

You poor, poor child! There's gotta be something they can do about that? I hope you at least get some fun out of external stimulation!!

ooooh, yeah. ;-) ...

ooooh, yeah. ;-) unfortunatly, im not a frisky person, so i dont usually pursue anything. he usually does and i just sort of accept it. lol.

you're lucky he really ...

you're lucky he really loves YOU cuz most men wouldn't deal with it.

it sounds like IBS. i have ...

it sounds like IBS. i have the same problem and can't eat anything that is too greasy. there is also a food additive that some places use to keep their lettuce fresh that can cause diarrhea. also check out her stress level. that can cause problems. good idea to keep a food diary to see when the problems happen

thanks for the ...

thanks for the suggestions, and I thought about her foods too, I'll get her to write down every little thing she eats.

Her symptoms sounds like ...

Her symptoms sounds like what my mom goes through. My mom has Crohn's disease and she has a permanent colstomy bag. She can eat some dairy but no spicy foods and she has flare ups all the time. It can run in families and there is no known cause or cure. Have her checked for that.

I forgot about that, I ...

I forgot about that, I know someone with that too! I hope she doesn't have that though, sounds like a pain to have.

I am still in shock that ...

I am still in shock that Conanabanana doesn't feel anything!

LOL, poor baby, I know, ...

LOL, poor baby, I know, but she seems to be ok!

It can be a pain but ...

It can be a pain but people who have it can usuanlly lead a normal life with few setbacks. It just depends on what severity she has if that is the problem. My mom has a severe case. I I know people who have mild cases. Just depends on the person and how strong of a person they are.

thanks, madabout. lol.

thanks, madabout. lol.

maybe it's not your whoo ...

maybe it's not your whoo haa that is the problem, maybe it is his..eerrrr, Captain North. Get him to try the pill, or maybe he just doesn't know how to Bowchickawawaw...........

LOL!!! LOL!!! ROFL!!

he has no problem with his, captain north (LOL!). and he can bowchichawawa with the best of them (LOL!). its gotta be me. unfortunatly. its just gotta be.

he he he! I'm sorry ...

he he he! I'm sorry conana! Do you not feel anything or just nothing good? You don't have to actually answer that. Maybe you should ask your doctor about it? If they can send a man to the moon and fix male pattern baldness and erectile disfuction, they've got to be able to do something! Or do they only do that stuff for men?

yeah, it's called "like a ...

yeah, it's called "like a virgin", stuff you get from those FUN (sex) parties, it's supposed to shrink you up some to make it tighter!! LOL!! I don't think it works but some people swear by it!!!

Okay girls you asked for ...

Okay girls you asked for it...scrotum, balls, penis, bloody feces, jock itch, impotence, testicles, lah lah lah, yellow sticky partially dried urine on the toilet seat with a pube stuck in it, dingle berries severely tangled in sphinkt hair, yada yada yada....gross man stuff :P

One of my daughters has ...

One of my daughters has been going thru the same stuff. She's 15 now, going into 10th grade, and this has been going on since March of 8th grade. Started with stomach complaints, then evolved into insomnia. The doctors ran all kinds of tests -- can't find anything wrong with her stomach, blood work shows no problem with her endocrine system. She's seeing a shrink and had to finish last school year on home instruction (where the teachers come to her and she's on medical leave).

A sleep study gave us some info, and she's seeing a pulmonary doc next week. In addition, she's getting massage therapy and seeing a holistic doc who is evaluating nutritional info.

A huge chunk of the problem is anxiety disorder, and it's becoming more and more common in girls this age.

GOD that SUXXXX!! I feel ...

GOD that SUXXXX!! I feel for you and her, I hope it doesn't escalate into that but I'm open to all suggestions.

You might ask her doctor ...

You might ask her doctor to check to see if she has celiac disease. Normally it's associated with wheat gluten, but it SOMETIMES can begin as a bacterial infection which can be further irritated by wheat gluten. I hope things improve for her.

Also, it's not possible that she has an eating disorder, is it? You said she weighs 76 pounds -- I hope none of her friends have introduced her to Exlax. It IS very common in young girls, though.

she is not tall either for ...

she is not tall either for her age, like I was when I was 12/13yrs old, little for her age, about 4'8", the other students in her class tower over her!!

when people see her they ...

when people see her they think she's about 9 or 10 not 13!!

lilytoo is right on. She ...

lilytoo is right on. She needs to keep a diary of EVERY SINGLE THING she eats. I did that as a freshman in college when I had some severe gastro problems. It turned out that I was lactose intolerant and that was unknown until that very year. I eliminated EVERY THING from my diet and began eating ONLY one thing at a time starting with the most bland, bread and starches like baked potato with Nothing on it. Pretty soon we also discovered that I had a duodinal ulcer and the things that set it off were dairy and black pepper. By adding only ONE thing at a time to the Ultra bland diet we were able to pinpoint it in a week or two. I eat a LOT of VERY hot stuff but even red peppers like you put on pizza did not bother me and yet black pepper, even a Tiny Speck of it turned my innerds into a carpet bomb type war zone. After a rest for a few years I was able to tolerate black pepper again just fine and after a few more years I was able to stomach cheese and other dairy without a problem. The key is the process of elimination. NOTHING but the most bland food at first and when everything is OK you VERY Gradually add other items back ONE AT A TIME until you figure out which one or which ones are bothering you. To do this effectively you MUST keep a diary writing down EVERY SINGLE thing you eat. Without that it Will Not Work! It is Amazing how many things we just pop in our mouths and don't realize or keep track of and then wonder later why we are having trouble. When you write it ALL down you begin to see exactly what it was and can figure it out very quickly.

If it's nothing to do with anything she's eating then she needs counseling. There is NOTHING stigmatic, or should be NOTHING stigmatic about that. When we have a broken arm or leg we wouldn't worry about going to a doctor to get it treated but people think of a problem in their heads as not so tangible and therefore not "real" so they feel it's embarrassing to go to get help for that. It's JUST as real. It needs to be treated JUST as much as a broken bone. The only shame is in NOT getting treatment and needlessly suffering further.

I'll keep all this in mind ...

I'll keep all this in mind when I go to the DR tomorrow!!!
