Why can't we give the police the ability to issue short term protection orders in cases like these? The police could issue an protective order for no more than 96 hrs, anything above that would have to be approved by a judge.

Why not have the prisons issue victims notices that inmates are being released and give them the option of having a protective order issued as condition of release?
