know what really IRKS me?

...people who turn their head ALL the way around while changing lanes and driving!!!  I mean, WHY??!!  that's what the rear/side view mirrors are for!  that's how accidents happen, the minute they turn around to look behind them, then the person IN FRONT them will put on brakes and BAM!!  Unless you are missing these mirrors, you should, AT MOST, only need to GLANCE QUICKLY to the side because of the blind spot in the mirrors.  I was just driving on the interstate and this JAG OFF was not only driving fast but was changing lanes like a fool AND EVERY time he changed lanes he'd turn around AND stick his HEAD OUT THE WINDOW!!  I made sure I stayed FAR away from him.  he was an accident waiting to happen.

It's a blind spot Dawn. Side mirrors have a little text on there that says "Objects in mirror are closer then they appear" so even though it looks like you're past the guy, you might not be. I have a blind spot in my car and I have to turn around to see if there is anyone there. If you're following so close to the person in front of you that you will hit them in that second that you turn and look then you deserve it for following that close!

Also, I used to drive a Ford E-350 that only had a front window, and a back window. Almost everywhere was a blind spot. Hence they make those blind spot mirrors now. I picked some up for my car just so I can have them, but still when someone is near my blind spot I look so I can actually see where they are.

Speaking of blind spots - what's up with vehicles having such a wide "arm" at the front windshield now a days? Everyone I know with a newer vehicle has one - it's on the sides of the front window. Mine is about 5" wide, and I have to actually look AROUND it before I pull out into an intersection. It's kinda a hazard, but I'm sure it has something to do with the 5 star crash rating...

I know about blind spots...I said it in my post above that it would be the only reason to look to the side.

my car is a bit tough to see out the windows. i chose it because it does have nice big windows but there is a wicked blind spot and i have to turn my head farther. i have nearly had a few accidents because i used just my mirrors rather than turning around to look. if the guy was taking his time and looking TOO long, than i can see that being a hazard.

When I drove that van I ...

When I drove that van I had to put my head out the window to know for sure where I was and where the cars around me where. I did my best to turn into the lane I needed to be into, but if I wasn't there then I had to do what it took to get where I needed to be. I maintain a safe distance at all times, because I know how bad blind spots can be.

Ya know I was talking to a coworker today about the difference from East Coast to Alaska, he was just in Boston. He said he couldn't believe how back there when you put your blinker on people make room for you to get over, and how they will flash their lights or high beams to let you know you have room. They don't do that up here, they just speed up and don't give you room - so we HAVE to make sure they aren't in that blind spot. After being here 4 years I have only ONCE seen someone flash his lights when it was "clear" to get over, and I almost crapped my pants when I did. It's strange the differences. East Coast has more considerate drivers and customer services, but AK has nicer people when you walk on the streets.

I guess the type of car you drive may make it harder to see and depending on your height too, but this guy I was talking about was just an IDIOT! he had his seat laid back. I mean WHY do these young guys sit THAT FAR BACK in the seat and it looks like a child is driving cuz they can barely see above the steering wheel!! if there was something low down on the street he'd roll over it cuz he wouldn't be able to see it sitting like that!!

i dont get that, either, ...

i dont get that, either, dawn. the whole seat laying down. what a driving hazard. it looks stupid and they can barely see over the steering wheel.
