Vista

OK OK OK... I know I have posted saying I will buy a MAC for my next computer, but I have now been reassured. My coworker is on vacation (her son is graduating from bootcamp) and I am house sitting for her. Love it here too, no smoking roommate stinking up my mornings!! The fish are a bit scary (HUGE) and the dogs are SWEETIE PIES. She gave me the password to get on her computer so I could use it while here. I didn't realize when putting the password in that it's Vista. Then all of a sudden out of no where I get this pop up *internet explorer is having problems, please wait while it's figured out*.... What?? I don't care what the problem is, and I don't like Microsoft (Bill Gates isn't in charge anymore) so just reboot my internet browser!! I like the old windows where they say "You had a problem, do you want to send info to Microsoft" because I was able to say NO. No Microsoft, I don't want you to know what the problem was. Maybe I was doing something secretive that I don't want ANYONE to know about?

Also - I play games at pogo.com, and it was near impossible to get my games going. I had to hold 2-3 keys down to get it to allow the "pop-up" even though I had stated 4 times to allow it. I know this is only my first time using it, but this is NOT user friendly!!! It's user-pissed-off!!!

And IGGY - Where the hell is the "computer" category?????? I don't know what to click now! While you add the computer one, you should add an internet as a sub.

LOL, you listed the category as gossip! oh well, nothing else to choose from, eh? I have the vista program but never installed it yet cuz I'm afraid to. been hearing too many horror stories so I'm hesitant to do it.
it was sent to me free after I bought this computer, but I dunno...

<p>AK.... good idea.... it ...

AK.... good idea.... it is done. There is a now a Computer category with sub-categories for Internet, Email, Mac and PC.

By the way, I use XP and Vista and OSX and I have to say that they each have quirky issues. Vista keeps trying to emulate the look and feel of the Mac, but they do a poor job of it and they end up hiding many of the controls that always made the PC easier to customize. But the Mac can be just as frustrating and inflexible. You gave Vista one try? Give Mac one try and see how that feels. I think you'll find that both require retraining and one try is not enough for either.

While we're on the subject of Mac vs. PC.... ever have a CD or DVD that didn't want to pop out of the drive when you hit the eject button? It doesn't happen often, but I think most of us know the paper-clip trick... where you poke it into the small hole on the drive to release the drive tray. Well, if you own a sexy new iMac, you may have to think twice. Steve Jobs has this thing about design... and I give him much credit for it... but when form trumps function, it's not good. In the case of the iMac, Stevie decided that buttons... and even a tiny little CD eject hole... would compromise the elegant lines of his computer. So... no buttons.... no hole. What do you do when a CD becomes stubborn and won't eject? Well, here's my advice...

1. Tip computer forward about 45 degrees. Yes, the 24" is kind of heavy and difficult to balance, but let go with one hand and press the CD Eject button on the keyboard real quick, and then bang on the computer while you hear the mechanism attempt to eject the disk... but don't bang too hard because the computer must be on while you do this and, well, if you bang too hard you crash the hard drive. It may not work the first time, but give it 2 or 3 tries. Just keep on banging.

2. It that fails, try tipping the computer in the opposite direction and repeat the process.

3. If that fails, take the monitor apart and remove the disk that way. How? Don't know 'cause I was lucky... after about 5 tries tipping the computer, the disk came out. I've had the problem 3 or 4 times and the tipping method has worked. Opening up the computer is a whole nother story and I know nothing about it. As we know, there are no user serviceable parts in an iMac and Steve wouldn't want you to muss up your hair worrying about what's inside. I couldn't even see any screws. Oh yeah... screws aren't elegant... they're probably hidden somewhere so you won't find them.

"Are you really sure" is ...

"Are you really sure" is super annoying. You can turn it off... but when you do, you are also turning off some useful security protections. Most people seem to keep it on... and eventually get used to the persistent pop-ups.

I need to see it and use ...

I need to see it and use it for myself on someone's computer so I can get a feel for it and see if I like it and then decide if I want to install it.

<p>When the error came up ...

When the error came up asking if you would like to send the info to Microsoft its not sending any personal info, its just sends what happened to cause the crash. I find that 9 out of 10 times that there is a fix for whatever caused the crash. If you're experiencing the problem with Pogo, try updating the Flash Player or Java (can't remember which one it was), it most likely has an older XP version. Its funny cause Pogo crashes for me all the time when I use it on XP! I am certain the the problem was with the flash or Java app.

Vista has gotten a bad rap it's a more stable OS than Xp was. People complain that Vista needs better equipment to run on, which is true, but then again try running a PC designed for XP with Windows 98 software, YIKES!

Dawn you can run a dual boot configuration which will allow you to run Xp and Vista on the same PC. You can test Vista without erasing XP. Give it a try.

Anyone who thinks Vista or ...

Anyone who thinks Vista or OSX is a pain oughta try Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xbuntu I'm playing around with it now. Its a pain to work with, to get certain things to work you have to type line commands into a terminal. Arg! It's nice looking a fast but a pain in the neck I advise staying away from these OS's for awhile.

RK - it didn't ASK me if I wanted to send anything to Mircosoft, it just did. I don't like that - I like having the choice to send info. I have an older version of XP at home, and have NEVER had any problems with pogo. Went on to pogo today, and again Vista couldn't handle it. I know for sure that I am not getting a laptop with Vista now!! Almost makes me want to join that website that was created to save XP!!
You must have paid someone a little something extra PV, because I've been using this for two days and it's crashed twice.
Hopefully *fingers crossed* I sell my old car tonight so I can shop for my MAC.

Iggy - thanks for all that info, and adding the categories. It's always good to hear things from people that have a computer job. I mean we all use them, but we work on a different end. I'm sure after using Windows all my life it's going to be a big change going over to Mac, but I might as well do it now rather then later. It was a huge difference going from Windows Media Player to iTunes, and after doing that I found I like iTunes better. I won't be getting the iMac, I'm going to get a laptop. I just LOVE how cute the iMac is, but I want to be able to take it with me when I travel up here. Summer has begun and I won't be in town on the weekends anymore.

Ignorilla, I think your ...

Ignorilla, I think your post is one of the biggest reasons why Apple's market share will never increase to Microsoft levels. Apple decides what the user should or should not have with thier products. As a consumer I think a computers configuration should be my choice. Apple has a very small amount of hardware that is usable with a MAC, you want a different video thats not Apple approved then you can't use it. At least with Windows you can go into any store and be assured that anything you pick up will likely work on a Windows based computer. Linux based PC's have a wide variety of hardware choices but nearly as many Windows but still wallops OSX.
