Ky. inmate who escaped jail returns on own

Ky. inmate who escaped jail returns on own

PADUCAH, Ky. – Chad Toy's escape from jail wasn't what shocked his jailers; it was his plea to be let back in. "When I rang the bell at the jail and told them who I was, they were surprised," Toy told The Paducah (Ky.) Sun newspaper. "I guess they haven't seen that before."

Toy, 21, was in the McCracken County Regional Jail in western Kentucky awaiting trial on charges stemming from a July home invasion. He's also serving a four-year sentence for theft.

Officials said he escaped early Monday while on a cleanup detail in the lobby. He bolted after a guard unlocked the front doors to clean trash from a breezeway.

But Toy returned that afternoon, wet and covered with grime. He told authorities his sister had persuaded him to surrender because his family feared for his safety.

Jailer Bill Adams said he doubts Toy's account. He thinks the escapee spent his brief liberty hiding beside the Tennessee River.

Adams said it was the first time in his 14 years as a deputy and jailer that he's seen an escaped convict willingly return.

Toy told the newspaper, "It was a spur of the moment decision. I saw an open door and just ran through it."

He added, "I am sorry about what I did. If I had it to do over again, I would have never run out the door."

Stupid College Students.

By: Mad Vulcan in People Who Are... - on November 18th, 2008

It has become a real problem on campus students crossing the road without looking both ways. We have had 7 students hit in the past 3 years for not looking when crossing the road. I almost hit one when she walked out between 2 buses good thing I was only going 10 MPH in a 25 or for sure I would have hit her head on I just shook my head at her like you retard.

Then today one just walks out into the road not at a crosswalk just walks out right in front of me. Last week we had one student get hit by a car driven by another student. The dumb student driving passed a city bus on campus in a double lane and creamed the student. That same student passed my wife just before that in a double lane. WTF are schools teaching these retards.

World Hunger Relief. Use your soda buying to save lives!

By: TGIX in People Who Are... - on November 18th, 2008

Food riots erupted across the globe this year in countries such as Egypt and India. Food pantries in the United States also warned that they were running out of food because of unprecedented demand. The news from the World Food Programme is even grimmer: A child dies of hunger every six seconds, and hunger now kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

The number of children who are starving, even right here in the U.S. of A. is staggering. Regardless Of The Contention Some Will Make That There are Those Who Are Poor And Starving Because Of Bad Choices, No One Can Claim That THE CHILDREN Deserve To Die Of Starvation.

I think it is no coincidence that we mark World Hunger Relief Week just prior to Thanksgiving, a time we traditionally celebrate with great feasts. Imagine that you can save a life and with very little effort at all. You can do just that. Give food or money to those who will feed the hungry. It takes so little to do sooooo much. All you need to do is skip a soda or two a week from a vending machine and you can keep a child alive! Instead, simply bring to work your own soda bought in a 12 pack from the grocery store, for about a dollar less per bottle or can, donate the difference, and you can save a life! Imagine that! That's all it takes!

Do you respect or regard sports figures as "heros"? Real heros save real lives. YOU can be a REAL HERO. That's all it takes, a tiny amount of effort and time. It doesn't even mean missing out on your soda in the simple example I provided. Just take a moment and a tiny bit of effort to bring your own to work or where ever you go and put the difference towards feeding a starving child. Ever been hungry? Ever TRULY been hungry? It's not fun. For a child to go through it daily is not even sane. It's torture. When they die of it that is a crime against humanity BY those of us who have more and are able to do more, with less, live the same as we do (still have our sodas) and yet save lives!

The upcoming Digital TV conversion

By: TGIX in People Who Are... - on November 18th, 2008

It can be rather confusing so I looked into it since I have a number of TV's (some I use, some that I don't use but still work very well) and only two of them all are capable of digital over-the-air reception.

I figured that if times continue to get tough enough, there is an outside chance that I might need to cut back on costs even more than I already have and yet I would like to still be able to receive TV, high quality TV too, and for free.

You will receive ZERO over-the-air broadcast TV reception, Nothing for free, once the digital conversion takes place unless you have a digital TV that is already capable of receiving broadcast digital signals.. So It made sense to me to buy at least one converter box. The government is giving out $40 discounts towards them right now and without a converter, the non-digital TV's I have would become worthless.

Here's the info I got and will share so you may not have to do all the same research. It wasn't terribly difficult but here is probably all you need to know about this stuff in condensed format -

WHO NEEDS A TV CONVERTER BOX?
On February 18 2009, conventional Analog TV reception over an antenna comes to an end - and the Digital transmission era will follow. On that date, Over-The-Air broadcasts will be in a crystal clear high-def (HD) digital format. If you're receiving your TV stations via rabbit ears or a roof-top antenna, you'll need a converter box to prepare your older television for the new digital revolution.

Converter boxes have TV & A/V cable inputs and outputs, and contain both a digital ATSC tuner and an analog NTSC tuner. They receive digital signals and convert them to analog. The converter box sits between your antenna and any analog tuner-enabled device, such as your TV or VCR. Converters provide EXTRA FEATURES your old TV may not have, such as: Onscreen Menus, their own remote control, a built-in on-screen Electronic (think 'TV Guide') Program Guide of your local station schedule, V-Chip Parental Controls, and the ability to display both standard 4:3 and wide-screen 16:9 content in a single, Energy-Star compliant box.

Not just any antenna will do; you need an antenna that receives both UHF and VHF signals for a converter box to work

Big particle collider repairs to cost $21 million

Electrical failure shut down Large Hadron Collider nine days after it started

By Alexander G. Higgins

updated 7:05 a.m. MT, Mon., Nov. 17, 2008

GENEVA - Fixing the world's largest atom smasher will cost at least $21 million and may take until early summer, its operator said Monday.

An electrical failure shut down the Large Hadron Collider on Sept. 19, nine days after the $10 billion machine started up with great fanfare.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research recently said that the repairs would be completed by May or early June. Spokesman James Gillies said the organization know as CERN is now estimating the restart will be at the end of June or later.

"If we can do it sooner, all well and good. But I think we can do it realistically (in) early summer," he said.

The organization has blamed the shutdown on the failure of a single, badly soldered electrical connection.

The atom smasher operates at temperatures colder than outer space to get maximum efficiency and experts needed to gradually warm the damaged section to better assess it, he said.

"Now the sector is warm so they are able to go in and physically look at each of the interconnections," Gillies told The Associated Press.

The cost of the work will fall within the organization's existing budget, Gillies said.

175,000 Gulf War vets have this illness

I wonder how many of the soldiers there now, or who have returned from the latest war, will also be diagnosed with something like this. And it sure does take a long time before the feds will own up to it.

Another stupid research project…

By: conanabanana02 in People Who Are... - on November 17th, 2008

If you have no idea why we’re pondering that question today, go brush your teeth real quick and grab a drink (orange juice, iced tea, beer—anything except water). Awful, isn’t it?

You can thank sodium laureth sulfate, also known as sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), or sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) for ruining your drink, depending on which toothpaste you use. Both of these chemicals are surfactants – wetting agents that lower the surface tension of a liquid – that are added to toothpastes to create foam and make the paste easier to spread around your mouth (they’re also important ingredients in detergents, fabric softeners, paints, laxatives, surfboard waxes and insecticides).

While surfactants make brushing our teeth a lot easier, they do more than make foam. Both SLES and SLS mess with our taste buds in two ways. One, they suppress the receptors on our taste buds that perceive sweetness, inhibiting our ability to pick up the sweet notes of food and drink. And, as if that wasn’t enough, they break up the phospholipids on our tongue. These fatty molecules inhibit our receptors for bitterness and keep bitter tastes from overwhelming us, but when they’re broken down by the surfactants in toothpaste

Just wanted to drop a posting to let you guys know that I am still alive and bitching.   I have been extremely busy taking the tax course and cleaning house and going on vacation to AZ. (sorry wadv)  I also couldn't get a minute of time to myself without having the hubby question everything I was doing.   He has gone back to work but I still have a butt load of stuff that I want to get done before the holidays.  Still looking for a job.  Have a few prospects but nothing solid right now.  I will drop back by in a few days to give updates.  BTW  the houseguests from hell left a couple of months ago and we are still trying to clean up from their disaster that they left us.  NEVER AGAIN are they allowed in my house.

Why didn’t all hetero marriages in those states suddenly dissolve?

By: TGIX in People Who Are... - on November 16th, 2008

The right wing nutjobs who said that allowing gay marriage would destroy the institution of marriage have been proven wrong. By their logic, in states where gay marriage has been made legal, all hetero marriages would suddenly go to ruin.

That has not happened. "Normal" marriages are exactly as intact as they were before.

Do they admit they were wrong? Do the right wing nutjobs admit any fault at allllll???? OF COURSE THEY DON'T. They are right about everything, can't ever be wrong about anything. They made the claim and it was their biggest fear and it didn't come true - just like not finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, the right wing nutjobs can NEVER admit being wrong.

It's a mental illness. Nearly one half of the public subscribed to these mass hysteria mental illnesses. I say take all of those tens of millions they've jailed for minor pot law violations out of prison and put these mentally ill masses of right wing nutjobs into those cells until or unless they are made well again. We would all be so much better off.

Thank goodness there are those of us who did Not "drink the Kool-Aid".

The most Amazing Ill-Logic of the republicans and why aren’t they institutionalized?

By: TGIX in People Who Are... - on November 16th, 2008

For EIGHT LONNNNNNNG YEARS (and before, back with Bush Sr. and Ronald Reagan) we've been subjected to all the mentally ILL Reaganomics that if we further enrich the already filthy rich we will give more jobs to the rest of us in the middle class and to the poor which will be best for the economy.

It didn't work under Reagan.

It didn't work under Bush Sr.

And it failed in the most massive way under Bush lite.

There have not been larger losses of jobs, higher unemployment, which ARE due to the republican policies, in many decades.

It is a CRUSHING situation they have put upon us out of their own personal greedy ambitions.

So can anyone tell me why these "trickle-down" (or more like piss-on-our-heads) economics are still supported by even one person who isn't committed to a loony bin for being so unbelievably moronic?

Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results IS the very definition of insanity.

That is worth repeating as it is FACT and it IS what the republicans have been doing…

Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results IS the very definition of insanity.

The republicans, Bush above all else, are therefore legally insane. Why aren't they committed to nuthouses? They lost BIGGGG TIIIIIIIME in the elections because the majority of the population knows this to be true but they should be locked up. They just are not at all in touch with reality and many are still in positions of power. That makes them very dangerous. Just look at all the ENORRRRRRRMOUS damage they have already done to our economy.

Obama’s first Blunder

By: rkinne01 in People Who Are... - on November 16th, 2008

Bailing out the Auto industry is a wrong move, its like putting a bandage on a gapping wound. The problems in the American auto industry won't disapate by simply throwing money at them.

The auto crisis came about because:

1. The unions/workers got greedy. The workers asked for wage increases knowing full well that thier company(ies) weren't doing well. Common sense says that when conditions are tough you don't ask for raises.

2. NAFTA and other agreements like it, made it hard for the Big Three to compete with overseas vendors. NAFTA gave Japan, Germany, and other companies unfair advantages importing and exporting cars. Repealing these agreements would help Ford, GM, and Chrysler to compete.

3. Japan has been putting out more reliable and innovative cars. I've read that this gap is closing but is it too late? Public perception is hard to change, alot people don't think of the big three as having good quality product.

4. Too much fat on the corporate side.  Building multi-million dollar offices, buying corporate jets, lavish vacations on the company "dime", buying lavish suites at Piston/Lions/Tigers/Red Wings games, and many other waseful spending habits don't help and doesn't exactly foster good will when you lay off 5,000 workers.

5. The State of Michigan hasn't been much help either. Tax breaks could have helped, diversifying into other industries would have bought more cash into Michigan which have enabled the State to provide more help.

6. The Big Three have been slow to adapt to new trends. It takes Ford YEARS to make changes to product while the Japanese seem to adapt on the fly.

A possible cure for AIDS?

By: rkinne01 in In the News, Health - on November 14th, 2008

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/14/health/ 14hiv.html?bl&ex=1226811600&en=69c9c3988c55907d&ei=5087%0A

Someone in the article says they would rather take the AIDS medication, I can't help but wonder it that person knows what an AIDS patient has to take. The AIDS medications are not as wonderful as most people think, they often have horrible side effects (diarhea, headaches, etc). There are often several pills that need to be taken several times a day and night, some require being taken every 4 hours.

I don't know about the rest of you but I'd take a chance with the bone marrow transplant, AIDS would kill me eventually anyway so why not take a chance for some sort of a normal life?

I'm also surprised that the doctors in the story were so quick to dismiss this! It's almost like they don't want a cure to be found, it must be a money thing. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this is supressed, never to heard about again.

Better than a Flu Shot!

Miss Beatrice, The church organist, was in her eighties and had never been married. She was admired for her sweetness and kindness to all. One afternoon the pastor came to call on her and she showed him into her quaint sitting room. She invited him to have a seat while she prepared tea. As he sat facing her old Hammond organ, the young minister noticed a cute glass bowl sitting on top of it. The bowl was filled with water, and in the water floated, of all things, a condom! When she returned with tea and scones, they began to chat. The pastor tried to stifle his curiosity about the bowl of water and its strange floater, but soon it got the better of him and he could no longer resist. 'Miss Beatrice', he said, 'I wonder if you would tell me about this?' pointing to the bowl.

'Oh, yes,' she replied, 'Isn't wonderful? I was walking through the park a few months ago and I found this little package on the ground. The directions said to place it on the organ, keep it wet and that it would prevent the spread of disease. Do you know I haven't had the flu all winter.'

Being busy: a badge of honor?

By: timmar68 in Parenting - on November 11th, 2008

In order not to have too much stress in my life, I figured out ways for me to have time to myself without neglecting the family, housework, and work. When I talk with people about this they act like I'm some sort of lazy person. All I hear is about how they don't have time for this or that when I explain how I do it. It wouldn't be so bad but they act like they're bragging that they don't have time for themselves.

Why is it so horrible that I do that? Those people are so stressed and they act like it's a badge of honor-like I should be ashamed that I'm not as stressed as they are.

Do any of you find ways to de-stress yourselves? And do others make you feel bad about it?
